BBC Media Action in Bangladesh uses media and communications to improve family health, enable people to hold their leaders to account, and to help people improve their economic security and preparedness for disaster. Our long-standing audience-driven weekly television and radio debate programme, BBC Bangladesh Sanglap, gives people from across the country a chance to question those in power. We are producing an exciting television community challenge programme to support Bangladeshis to adapt to changes in climate. Our high profile, quality television drama, public service announcements and radio programmes are helping to improve sexual, maternal and child health.
Job Purpose Reporting to the Country Director, the Programmes Editor will lead the production of a range of television, radio, and on-line outputs. Working very closely with three Project Directors and the Executive Producer (Health), he or she will ensure that that media outputs are delivered to BBC editorial and production standards and that there are appropriate staffing and processes in place to support all aspects of production. The postholder will ensure all outputs comply with BBC editorial guidelines, and work to increase the understanding and effective application of the guidelines across the Bangladesh office. The Programmes Editor will work with research and advisory staff to ensure that the outputs respond to research findings on audience needs, and provide content which addresses the needs of target audiences in a creative and engaging way. He or she will build the capacity of producers and other staff, and will also build the capacity of broadcast and production partners, where relevant, to support the development of exciting and engaging programmes reflective of audience needs. As part of the senior management team, the Programmes Editor will share responsibility for the development of new projects and the expansion of operations in the country office. The post will be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with travel within Bangladesh and possible international travel.
Lead production of BBC Media Action Bangladesh’s factual outputs on television, radio, on-line, print and mobile.
Ensure that all outputs comply with the BBC’s editorial guidelines and standards, upholding the key values of fair dealing, accuracy, impartiality, trust and integrity.
Communicate clear expectations to production teams and third parties, especially freelancers and sub-contractors, regarding editorial guidelines and standards, compliance and sign-off processes and contributor consent policies, making the BBC’s values clear to all involved.
Work closely with the research and production teams to ensure that outputs reflect and respond to the needs and preferences of BBC Media Action’s target audiences in Bangladesh.
Mentor and pass on editorial and technical knowhow to production staff, including design and delivery of informal in-house training sessions, with the aim of improving production and editorial standards across the office.
Resolve issues arising at any time in the production process, with appropriate referral of serious issues which may pose a compliance or other significant editorial or reputational risk to the Country Director and relevant Project Director.
Work with Country Director and project management staff to manage effective relationships with broadcast and production partners, as well as with advisors and other staff in BBC Media Action headquarters and the wider BBC.
Represent BBC Media Action, where appropriate, with national and international partners and stakeholders, including government.
Ensure BBC Health and Safety guidelines to be observed on all productions, providing advice and support to staff to implement them; and support training of production staff to enable them to identify and manage risk.
Play an active role in BBC Media Action Bangladesh’s senior management team, participating in wider office operations including the development of new business.
Essential skills and experience
Significant experience producing television and radio programmes, delivering high profile projects to the highest quality.
Strong practical working knowledge of production and post-production processes, techniques and technology.
Extensive experience of making judgments on matters of editorial sensitivity.
Proven ability to analyse and critically evaluate editorial content, identifying strengths and weaknesses in programme content, and to drive constant improvement in output.
Imagination and an enthusiasm for generating new ideas, and evidence that such ideas have resulted in successful programmes or production initiatives.
Experience of mentoring or training production teams.
Experience working with both junior and senior production staff.
High level knowledge of the BBC’s editorial guidelines.
Familiarity with Risk Assessments, Health and Safety principles and responsibilities.
Understanding of and commitment to international development, including the use of media to achieve developmental goals.
Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, including experience working with others who don’t have English as a first language.
Ability to remain calm, organised and focused under pressure, deliver to tight deadlines, and operate in a pressured production environment in an overseas context.
Excellent written and spoken English.
Desirable skills and experience
Experience working in international development.
Experience of living and working in Bangladesh or another developing country in Asia.
Understanding of using media to bring about development change.
Experience of working closely with external partners, and/or building, maintaining, and influencing high level external relationships.
Experience in using research to drive the creation of media outputs.
Bangla language skills.
